What Should I Expect During My First Visit To Circle of Light Massage in Lexington KY?
Intake
Please click here for the intake form.
Please print, fill out and bring with you.
Arrive about 10 min early for this first session so we have time to discuss your needs and concerns. I will go through your intake form and ask questions pertaining to what you would like to accomplish during your massage session, including the type of pressure you enjoy and any specific areas of your body you’d like more time and attention on. You will also have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have.
I will then step out of the room to allow you to undress to your desired comfort level and relax on the massage table. The table has optional heat, memory foam and soft, clean linens and blankets. You will remain properly draped the entire session to keep you comfortable and warm. *Please note that complete undraping will not be done at any time.* A skin nourishing oil may be used to allow massage of your muscles without discomfort or excessive friction.
Post-Massage
When your massage session is complete, I will softly let you know that I will be stepping back out of the room to allow you time to get dressed. You will feel extremely relaxed in your body after the massage, and you may feel relief from your former aches and pain. For the first 24 hours after a deep tissue massage specifically, it’s normal to experience some soreness or achy muscles because of the release of lactic acid from the muscle tissue (much like a post workout). After that time you will feel an increase in energy, greater productivity and heightened awareness. However, you should not experience any residual soreness from other modalities. I highly recommend that you drink extra water following any massage to hydrate your soft tissues. I can also answer any further questions you may have, and reschedule you if you wish.

What will the massage feel like?
Your massage should always feel good. Everyone responds differently to receiving massage – some people get deep relaxation and stress relief and other people get off the table feeling “lighter” and energized. The key is to remember that I am there to provide a great experience for you. If the pressure is too deep or too light, please let me know. You won’t hurt my feelings! I can feel a lot of what’s going on in the soft tissues of your body, but your nerve endings are your own. Please communicate with me so that your session is enjoyable. Your feedback is always appreciated.
When should I get a massage?
Anytime! There is no rule saying you must wait until you are having a stress meltdown or have incurred an injury to get a massage. Anytime is the right time to get one. Massage is an affordable and comprehensive “health supplement” and preventative care for your body and mind. Regular massage is a great way to keep your body tuned up, much like changing the oil in your car. It’s preventative care for discomfort and harm to your body and ongoing relief for the challenges and stresses of our modern world. Consider massage the rejuvenation button for the amazing machine that is your body and the calm oasis for your hectic mind to retreat to.
How frequently should I get massage?
This depends on what your reasons are for receiving a massage. For maintenance massage – managing daily stress and preventative care – one massage a month is common. Some clients prefer to come in weekly or every two weeks for the same reasons. There is no such thing as too much massage! It is simply one of the most effective and pleasant and beneficial therapies that exist in the world.
For clients in chronic pain or who have had recent injuries* that are interfering with their daily life, weekly massages are essential in order to build on each week’s improvements in the restructuring and healing of the body until the desired results have been achieved.
Finally, many clients receive massage as frequently as their budget will allow. For this reason we have several different price structures set up to make it easy for you to afford the bountiful benefits of massage on a regular basis.
*If you have been recently injured please make sure you have seen a physician and been cleared for bodywork!
How long will the massage session last?
All massage sessions include intake time for discussion about what you want out of your session that day and time to get dressed/undressed. Many clients prefer a 90 minute session to allow time for the full body massage plus time to spend working on any problem areas, such as common stressed areas like the neck, shoulders, low back and feet. Session lengths vary from 60-120 min.
How much should I tip/Am I supposed to tip?
It is customary in the Massage Therapy industry all around the world to tip one's therapist. Similar to your waiter/waitress in a restaurant or your hairdresser, it is standard to tip your massage therapist. The percentage of tip should be based on the full price of the session (before any specials or discounts), and most clients tip between 15-25%.
Should I undress completely?
No. You only need to disrobe to your desired comfort level. About half of my clients prefer to keep their undergarments on and the other half prefer to undress completely. Whichever your choice, the main concern for both you and me is your level of comfort. In order for you to relax, you need to feel that your boundaries are being respected. I can work with you in all situations. Your body will always be draped ethically and professionally. Even the most modest person can be massaged without fear.
Will the therapist be present while I disrobe?i
No. I will leave the room while you undress, get comfortable on the table and cover yourself with the sheet and blanket. I will make sure you are on the table and settled in before I enter the room to begin.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
The massage session will be discussed in advance so that I can understand what issues you’d like resolved and be able to suggest both techniques I can offer and what areas of the body would most benefit being worked on. In a typical full body massage session, you will receive work on your back, neck, head, shoulders, arms, hands, gluts, hips, abdomen, legs and feet. You will not be touched on or near your genitals or breasts. If there are any parts of your body you do not want worked on, simply let me know before or during the session.
What if I am embarrassed about my body?
My focus is on providing therapeutic relief and pleasant stress reduction, not in judging your physique. I am experienced in working on people of all sizes, shapes and ages.
What should I do during my massage?
You have two very important jobs on the massage table: Relax. Breathe.
In other words, please make yourself comfortable. I will either gently move your body or communicate if I need to move part of your body, such as lifting an arm. I will also softly let you know when it’s time to turn over and will help hold the linens securely over your body allowing you time to roll over. Many clients close their eyes during the massage to more completely relax. Your time on the table belongs to you. If you feel like talking, you are welcome to, but you are not required to and it won’t be considered rude if you simply remain quiet and allow your mind and body to be still and calm. Some people find a maximum of relaxation by being quiet during their session.
What does a therapists license or certification mean?
Licensure means that a therapist has completed the state legislated number of hours at a certified massage therapy school and have also passed either a state or national licensing board, deeming them a Licensed Massage Therapist. There is very little difference between being state or nationally licensed. Some therapists prefer the national exam because they want the flexibility to apply for licensure in other states if they were to relocate. The credentials for our profession are LMT, or Licensed Massage Therapist.
Therapists are also required to maintain massage liability insurance. The most widely recognized are AMTA (American Massage Therapy Association) and ABMP (Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals).
Additionally, LMT’s must take Continuing Education classes – the number of hours determined by each state’s licensing board. In Kentucky, they must take 12 CE hours every 2 years. Some classes give therapists additional certification credentials and some therapists choose to list these after their names as well. You can search online to find out specifics of what these mean, as there are hundreds of massage therapy classes in all forms of modalities.
What is your cancellation policy?

24 to 12 hours notice: 50% of Appointment Price
12 hours or less: 100% of Appointment Price

Can I get a massage if I'm sick?
I prefer that you reschedule your appointment as soon as possible if you are under the weather. There will be no fee for illness.
